Roussilhe glasses are French frames designed and manufactured in Oyonnax, in the Jura eyewear region, by an independent company founded in 1979.

Roussilhe glasses are French frames designed and manufactured in Oyonnax, in the Jura eyewear region, by an independent company founded in 1979. From the design and working of acetate right through to the finishing touches, Roussilhe prides itself on French production that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern tools. The company was awarded the ‘Origine France Garantie’ label in 2012 and has retained it ever since. However, its range is not limited to a single aesthetic: its collections explore everything from classic shapes to highly colourful designs, retro-inspired styles and 3D-printed glasses. At Olivia Balm, the Roussilhe range consists entirely of optical frames and is exclusively for men. These are prescription frames, designed to accommodate corrective lenses and to be worn all day long.

Roussilhe eyewear — collection at Olivia Balm

How long has the Roussilhe brand been in existence?

The history of Roussilhe began in 1979 with Michel Roussilhe. The first collections were manufactured between Morez and Oyonnax, the two historic centres of the French eyewear industry. From the very start, the company placed the product at the heart of its business — a philosophy still evident in its identity several decades later, with a firm commitment to preserving and passing on the craft of eyewear-making. Since 2005, Ludovic Brochard and Maxime Rolandeau have been at the helm of the company, continuing this commitment to French manufacturing and craftsmanship. Roussilhe now has its own production workshops in Oyonnax, in the heart of the Jura region. This location gives it a rare distinction: the design and production of its acetate collections take place on-site, where several stages are directly managed by the company.

Where are Roussilhe glasses manufactured?

French manufacturing is one of the cornerstones of the brand’s identity. The workshops in Oyonnax carry out all the stages required to create an acetate frame: design, prototyping, cutting, hinge insertion, rivet fitting, polishing and finishing. It can take several dozen manual operations to produce a single pair. This approach enables the brand to combine traditional craftsmanship, passed down within the Jura eyewear industry, with more contemporary production processes and tools. The French origin is therefore not an argument tacked on to the product after the fact: it reflects an industrial and artisanal approach that the company presents as a central component of its work. And this is evident in the frame — the polishing, the assembly of the components and the attention to detail directly determine its final appearance.

What does the ‘Origine France Garantie’ label guarantee?

Roussilhe was awarded the ‘Origine France Garantie’ label in 2012 and states that it has retained it ever since. This label is based on specific criteria, relating in particular to the proportion of the cost price attributable to French production and the place where the product acquires its essential characteristics. It is subject to a certification process and regular audits. The purpose of this distinction is to clearly separate a general statement such as ‘made in France’ from a country of origin that is subject to specific certification. This is a point on which it is worth being precise, because it is verifiable: the Millésimes collection, for example, is designed and assembled by hand in the workshops in Oyonnax and is certified as such.

What are the Roussilhe eyewear collections?

The brand develops several collections, each with its own aesthetic and target audience. The overview below describes the brand, not our selection: not all of these ranges are available at Olivia Balm. Origines: the collection most directly linked to the craftsmanship of Jura-based eyewear makers, featuring distinctive shapes, carefully crafted proportions, beautiful acetate frames in tortoiseshell or bold colours, and traditional three-rivet hinges that serve as a hallmark of the brand. · Millésimes: a more understated approach, drawing on classic designs and intended to be widely wearable, available in both acetate and metal, with the collection’s logo engraved on certain sides or arms · POP: the most expressive range, which plays as much on shapes as on bold colours, with several nose bridge styles to suit a variety of face shapes · Clyde: a contemporary reinterpretation of the iconic silhouettes of the 1950s and 1960s, for wearers drawn to vintage style without seeking a literal reproduction · Bonnie and Miss Bonnie: two women’s collections, the first aimed at women, the second at young girls · POPiz: the children’s collection, for ages 5 to 12, developed in collaboration with a specialist optician and bearing the ‘Origine France Garantie’ label · Roussilhe 3D: a men’s range produced using additive manufacturing, made from Arkema’s Rilsan polyamide 11, a bio-based material derived from castor oil, which allows for graphic effects and structures that would otherwise be impossible to achieve. This diversity is the brand’s true hallmark: depending on the collection, a Roussilhe frame can be understated or make a bold statement on the face.

Which Roussilhe frames should you choose at Olivia Balm?

Our selection consists exclusively of prescription glasses and is exclusively for men. No sunglasses, no women’s range, no children’s frames: this is a deliberate choice by the optician rather than an omission, because these frames are designed to accommodate corrective lenses and to stay comfortably on the nose all day long. Two different terminologies coexist here and must not be confused. The models named after people — Vincent, Amalric, Charles and François in acetate, Garrel and Chabat in metal — are one-off pieces, each with its own distinct shape: this is where you should look for a frame with a distinctive design. The Origines collection, by contrast, comprises numbered models — 17, 18, 26, 27, 29 and 31 — mostly square in shape, which offer the same design concept across several widths — the most suitable choice for a simple pair worn eight hours a day. The Manta, the only nylon frame in the selection, offers a more sporty fit. Beyond style, the choice depends on the size of the frame, its shape, its fit and the prescription it will be fitted with. Send us your prescription along with your chosen model: we’ll check these details before you place your order.

Frequently asked questions about Roussilhe glasses

  • Q: Is Roussilhe a French brand?

A: Yes. Roussilhe is a French eyewear company founded in 1979 by Michel Roussilhe and managed since 2005 by Ludovic Brochard and Maxime Rolandeau. It has its own production workshops in Oyonnax, in the Jura region, and places French manufacturing at the heart of its identity.

  • Q: Where are Roussilhe glasses manufactured?

A: In the brand’s workshops in Oyonnax, at the heart of the Jura eyewear region. Here, the company brings together design, prototyping, acetate cutting, hinge fitting, rivet setting, polishing and finishing. Several dozen manual operations may be involved in the creation of a single pair.

  • Q: Do Roussilhe glasses carry the ‘Origine France Garantie’ label?

A: Roussilhe was awarded this label in 2012 and states that it has retained it ever since. It is based on the proportion of the cost price attributable to France and on the place where the product acquires its essential characteristics, and is accompanied by certification and regular audits. This is what distinguishes a certified origin from a simple ‘made in France’ label.

  • Q: How much do Roussilhe glasses cost?

A: From €129 to €199 depending on the model: €129 for the four entry-level acetate frames, €169 for the two metal frames, €189 for the Origines collection and €199 for the nylon Manta. This is the lowest entry-level price amongst our French brands. Lenses are charged separately, with the price depending on your prescription.

  • Q: Do you stock sunglasses for women or children in Roussilhe?

A: No. Our 13 Roussilhe models are all prescription frames and are all listed as men’s styles. The brand also produces women’s ranges and a children’s collection, but these are not included in our selection. It is still possible to have prescription lenses tinted for an optical frame: please let us know the model you are interested in, and we will confirm whether it is suitable.

  • Q: Are these frames suitable for varifocal lenses?

A: Generally speaking, yes, and particularly the square shapes in the Origines collection, where the height of the lenses allows for a comfortable fit. The Garrel, at 46 mm, is the narrowest in the range and requires prior verification, with your prescription to hand.
