Care

A well-cared-for pair of glasses lasts longer, stays pleasant to wear and preserves the full optical quality of the lenses. Here are the right everyday habits, recommended by your Olivia Balm optician in Lyon.

Cleaning your glasses: the right method

The right everyday reflex:

  • ✔️ First rinse with lukewarm water to remove dust
  • ✔️ Apply a drop of neutral soap (pH-neutral) to each lens
  • ✔️ Rub gently with your fingers, without pressing
  • ✔️ Rinse thoroughly
  • ✔️ Dry with a clean microfibre cloth
Did you know? Rubbing a dusty lens when dry is the main cause of micro-scratches. Lukewarm water removes 90% of abrasive particles before any contact.

Do's & don'ts

Recommended

  • A clean microfibre cloth, washed regularly
  • An optical cleaning spray free of harsh alcohol
  • Storage in a hard case when you are not wearing them

To avoid

  • Paper tissues, clothing (cotton scratches)
  • Household products, surgical spirit, scented wipes
  • Very hot water (can damage certain coatings)
  • Placing your glasses lens-side down on the table

👉 The Durci coating protects against micro-scratches, but no lens is completely scratch-proof. Good care remains essential.

  • Every day: a quick wipe with a microfibre cloth
  • Once or twice a week: a full clean with water and soap
  • Every 6 months: a visit to your optician for a check (screws, nose pads, alignment)

Protecting your glasses day to day

  • Always store them in a closed case when you are not wearing them
  • Remove them with both hands to preserve the alignment of the temples
  • Avoid leaving them in a car in full sun (extreme heat)
  • Never rest them on top of your head — it warps the temples

What to do if there's a problem?

  • Loose temples: drop by the shop, it's a free adjustment
  • Damaged nose pads: quick replacement at the optician
  • Scratched lenses: a Durci coating limits scratches but does not make them invisible. If they affect your vision, the lenses need to be replaced.
  • Bent frame: an optician can usually reshape it with heat

👉 At Olivia Balm, adjustment, checks and tightening are free, for life, for every pair bought in our shop.

Sunglasses: extra precautions

Sun lenses (and in particular polarised or photochromic ones) require the same care, but with a few extra attentions:

  • ✔️ Avoid thermal shocks (don't leave them on the beach in full sun and then go into the water)
  • ✔️ Rinse after swimming in the sea or pool — salt and chlorine attack the coatings
  • ✔️ Store in a hard case to avoid scratches in your bag
