Ray-Ban prescription glasses: classic styles and contemporary frames

Ray-Ban prescription glasses are available in aviator, square, round and rectangular shapes, in a variety of materials, sizes and colours.

Ray-Ban prescription glasses are available in aviator, square, round and rectangular shapes, in a variety of materials, sizes and colours. It is a wide-ranging collection, where the choice is not based solely on design: a prescription frame must also accommodate lenses, stay in place and be comfortable to wear from morning to night. Each of the brand’s major historic collections features a prescription range, allowing customers to find a familiar silhouette in a pair of prescription glasses. Alongside these, more recent models explore designs with no previous sunglasses counterpart. Our Ray-Ban optical range is one of the widest in our catalogue, and it features acetate and metal in almost equal measure: the frame material is just as important as the chosen shape.

Ray-Ban eyewear — collection at Olivia Balm

Since when has Ray-Ban been offering prescription glasses?

Ray-Ban launched its first prescription models in the early 2000s. The brand had initially established itself as a leading name in sunglasses before developing a comprehensive range of prescription glasses. This long history explains the brand’s special place in the eyewear industry: today’s prescription frames draw on a heritage of designs originally conceived to filter light, not to provide vision correction. Adapted for vision correction, these silhouettes feature a frame capable of accommodating a corrective lens, and sometimes revised proportions to create more vertical space.

How good are the prescription versions of Ray-Ban styles?

Iconic collections are available in prescription versions: the Aviator Optics, launched in 2016; the Wayfarer Optics, introduced in 2017; and the prescription versions of the Round Metal and the Clubmaster. The difference compared to their sunglasses versions lies in the frame: it must accommodate a corrective lens whose thickness varies according to the prescription, which requires sufficient internal height and, in some cases, a slightly redesigned front. The double bridge of the aviator style, the textured acetate frame, the pronounced upper rim or the thin metal frame remain perfectly recognisable; it is their behaviour once the lenses are fitted that differs. Choosing a pair of prescription glasses is therefore about finding a familiar style for an item worn all day long, and not just in bright sunlight.

Which style of Ray-Ban prescription frames should you choose?

Four main styles coexist within the optical range. A rectangular or square frame gives the face more structure and, in most cases, offers the most comfortable lens height. A round frame creates a softer look, but its effective lens height is shorter, which becomes a consideration when the prescription is more complex. The aviator shape, meanwhile, draws on the brand’s oldest design heritage and extends lower down in front of the eye. These are stylistic guidelines, not rules: the proportions of the face and those of the frame should be assessed together, and two models from the same range may look very different.

Acetate or metal: how the frame material affects your lenses

Acetate allows for more pronounced shapes; metal results in a visually slimmer design. With prescription frames, the choice does not end there: a thick frame hides the edge of the lens, whilst a thin metal rim allows it to show all the way round. The stronger the prescription, the more noticeable this difference becomes. Conversely, for mild to moderate prescriptions, metal frames remain lighter when worn for several hours. The choice therefore depends on style, but also on the comfort and fit required.

Frame size and progressive lenses: what should you check before ordering?

Size is a key factor for a pair worn every day. When choosing from a distance, the most reliable guide is comparison: compare the dimensions listed on the product page with those of a pair you already find comfortable. The width across the face, the bridge width and the temple length form a whole — one of these three measurements alone is not enough to make a decision. For progressive lenses, an additional factor comes into play: the available height within the lens circle, which must accommodate the transition between distance and near vision. This is not specified on the product sheets; we measure it on the frame before commencing lens production.

Frequently asked questions about Ray-Ban prescription glasses

  • Q: How much do Ray-Ban prescription frames cost?

A: From €139 to €239 for the frames only. The entry-level model is the RX7185, a square acetate frame priced at €139; the top-of-the-range models are the RX8908 and RX8412 at €239. The bulk of the range is priced at €179, comprising 15 of our 34 models. The cost of prescription lenses is added on top, depending on your prescription and the treatments selected: we will provide a quote before you place your order.

  • Q: What is the difference between an RX reference and an RB reference?

A: RX denotes a prescription frame, designed to accommodate corrective lenses; RB denotes a sunglasses model. The frames presented here therefore all bear an RX code. The iconic designs are available under both prefixes, as sunglasses on the one hand and as prescription frames on the other.

  • Q: Are Aviator or Wayfarer prescription glasses available?

A: Both styles are available in prescription versions: Ray-Ban launched the Aviator Optics in 2016 and the Wayfarer Optics in 2017. The Round Metal and Clubmaster also have prescription versions. The silhouette remains recognisable; it is the dimensions and lens height that determine the prescription the frame can accommodate.

  • Q: Are Ray-Ban prescription frames suitable for varifocals?

A: A large part of the range is suitable, but this needs to be checked on a model-by-model basis. Rectangular and square frames – 20 of our 34 models – offer the most comfortable height. Round and hexagonal frames, which are shorter, require prior measurement — this does not rule them out, but simply means a check needs to be carried out beforehand.

  • Q: How do you choose the size of a pair of prescription Ray-Bans?

A: Refer to the dimensions on the product page and compare them with those of a pair that already fits you well. Our frame widths range from 48 to 58 mm, a difference of ten millimetres between the narrowest and widest: this is enough for two models with similar designs to look very different on the same face. The width of the front and the overall proportions are the key factors.

  • Q: Does Ray-Ban offer its own corrective lenses?

A: The brand has a range dedicated to prescription glasses, with lenses designed to fit its frames, including its most iconic styles. For glasses fitted by an optician, it is the prescription and visual requirements that determine the lens specifications: index, coatings and type of progressive lens. Compatibility between the frame and the prescription can be determined from the model’s dimensions.
