What level of UV protection do Chloé sunglasses offer?
Beyond their design, a pair of sunglasses must, first and foremost, provide adequate protection against ultraviolet radiation. This performance depends on the model and the lenses fitted: several items in the collection claim 100% UVA and UVB protection, with a filter category of 2 or 3 depending on the frame. The two terms do not mean the same thing. Ultraviolet filtering is invisible and cannot be deduced from the tint: a clear lens can filter out all UV rays. The category, on the other hand, describes the degree of tint, and therefore the conditions in which the pair will be comfortable. It is better to check the specifications of the chosen model rather than generalising the details of one item to the whole collection.
Coloured or gradient lenses: which lens tint should you choose?
The colour of the lenses plays a major role in the look of a pair of sunglasses. Depending on the model, the brand offers plain, coloured or gradient lenses — gradients in warm tones on some models, and grey or brown on others. A gradient lens darkens towards the top of the lens and lightens towards the bottom: this is practical for reading a dashboard, but offers less protection in direct sunlight than a plain lens of the same category. A brown tint enhances contrasts, whilst a grey tint reproduces colours more faithfully. The tint should therefore be chosen as much for the desired aesthetic as for the intended conditions of use.
Aviator, square or round: which Chloé sunglasses style should you choose?
The collection allows you to explore several different styles. The aviator style is reimagined here in a contemporary interpretation; square models offer a more structured silhouette; some designs feature a rectangular shape, either narrower or more pronounced; others feature rounded proportions. With sunglasses, the shape is more important than with prescription glasses, because it affects how well the eyes are protected: a wraparound frame blocks side light much more effectively than a small round one, including glare. The decision must be based on the actual proportions of the model and the face, never on a universal rule.
Large frames and strong prescription: a decision to be made
The widest frames in this range are two metal models, and this is where the advice that most often changes people’s minds comes into play. The principle is mechanical: a wide frame requires a lens with a large diameter, the edges of which thicken as the prescription strength increases. The weight follows suit, and is concentrated on the nose. A superb pair of oversized sunglasses with their original lenses can thus, once fitted with corrective lenses, become a pair that sits comfortably and whose frame stands out in profile. Here is how we decide: Mild to moderate correction: no issues; the larger frames are even flattering · High prescription and large frame requested: allow for significant thinning of the lenses; factor this into the budget from the outset · High prescription strength and comfort as a priority: stick to the more modest frame sizes, where there is still a wide choice.
Can Chloé sunglasses be fitted with corrective lenses?
Some of the Chloé sunglasses are listed as compatible with prescription lenses, in solid or gradient tints. Whether this is feasible depends on the model, its construction and the correction required: a thin frame, a heavily curved lens or a very wide frame do not behave in the same way when fitted with prescription lenses. We therefore proceed in this order: fitting the frames, then ordering the lenses — never the other way round. A: From €239 to €379, including frames and factory-fitted sunglasses lenses, excluding prescription fitting. The CH0226S is the entry-level model and the CH0329S is the top-of-the-range model; the core of the range is priced at €299, where four models are available.
Q: Which size of Chloé sunglasses should you choose?
A: The temple widths range from 51 to 62 mm, a significant difference. The two largest models, CH0278S and CH0348S (62 mm), require a wide face to look balanced. For a narrow face, stick to between 51 and 55 mm. The most reliable guide is the first number engraved on the inside of the temple of a pair that already suits you.
Q: Can my prescription be fitted into a pair of Chloé sunglasses?
A: For most models, yes, they come with tinted lenses. The deciding factor is the combination of the frame size and your prescription strength: on the larger models in the range, a lens with a strong prescription becomes noticeably thicker at the edges and makes the pair heavier. A: Category 3 is for everyday use in bright sunlight; category 2 is for moderate light conditions or daytime driving. Please do not confuse the two: the category describes the tint of the lens, not its protection against ultraviolet rays.
Q: Do Chloé sunglasses block 100 per cent of UV rays?
A: The products in question claim to provide 100 per cent UVA and UVB protection. This characteristic is down to the lens itself and not its tint: a clear lens can block all ultraviolet rays, whilst a very dark lens without a protective coating causes the pupil to dilate without providing any protection. Check the specification on the model you have chosen rather than assuming it applies to the entire range.
